February 03, 2009 – Machine Shop Gets Jump Start With Help From REI

Like most entrepreneurs, Jack and Sheri Nicholson needed capital to establish their business, Big C Machine, Inc., a full service machine shop.

They visited with their local banker who referred them to Rural Enterprises of Oklahoma, Inc. (REI), a non-profit economic development firm that has been assisting Oklahoma businesses for over 25 years.

Big C Machine, Inc. , located in Chattanooga, OK, is the only tool shop in the area with computer numerical control (CNC)capabilities. Chattanooga, OK is centrally located between Lawton and Wichita Falls, TX, placing the business in an ideal market position to serve southwest Oklahoma and North Texas. The machine shop’s existing customer base is impressive and includes Lawton companies such as Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co, and Republic Paperboard Co., LLC. Customers also include Hydra-Rig, Inc. Duncan and Tranter, Inc., Wichita Falls. By combining business financing with the lease/purchase equipment program, REI provided the assistance the Nicholson’s needed to get their business off the ground.

“It’s great to have the flexibility to combine programs to meet the needs of a start-up business,” said Gilmer J. Capps, REI’s Lawton field representative. “Jack and Sheri are meeting a need and that’s always the first step to business success and we look forward to seeing this machine shop grow, prosper and create jobs.”

Jack Nicholson has been a machinist for over 25 years including experience in the U. S. Navy. He also worked for the City of Los Angeles and Shell Oil Company Refinery. Nicholson brings CNC programming, setup, machining and other diversified skills to the business and is actively involved with the farm and ranch community. His wife, Sheri, a 16-year employee of Bishop Independent School District, has business and accounting experience and will be involved in the day to day operations of the business.

“This new business is a great example of why I supported the establishment of an REI office in Lawton,” said Rep. Don Armes (R-Dist. 63). “Now our entrepreneurs in southwestern Oklahoma have ready access to all that’s available to them through this amazing organization that partners with local banks and offers so many diversified services. We’re also pleased to have Gilmer J. Capps representing REI. He’s ready to visit with you about your business plans and needs anytime.”

REI is an economic development firm with offices in five locations: Lawton, Alva, Durant, Oklahoma City and Tulsa.
